With Assembla it’s easier than ever to add files and folders to your repo straight from the webapp - no desktop client required!

Creating Files & Folders

Simply navigate to the Source sub-tab of your chosen repo. Then, on the right side of the screen, click on the Add button. A drop-down menu will appear with three options: Add new file, Upload new file, and Add new folder.

If you’re adding a file, a new screen will appear with a text box for the title and another for the body of the file. Both of these are editable, so create the file as you wish and then select Commit Changes.

To populate your new content with text from an existing local file, simply drag and drop that text file over the screen.

Additionally, you can select the language your file will be written in. Users can choose from plaintext and from a variety of coding languages. Those languages will then allow for syntax highlighting, proper indentation, and an option to allow code folding.

If you’re adding a folder, a drop down menu will ask for the title of the folder you wish to create. Fill out the text box and then select Create New Folder to create the folder.

Uploading New Files

To upload a new file, select Upload new file from the drop-down menu and then either drag your selection(s) to the screen or click on selecting them from your computer to open a file browser. Currently, files can only be uploaded from your local machine. Importing from Dropbox, Google Drive, or other Cloud locations is not supported.

More than one file can be uploaded at once, but duplicate file names are not allowed. To edit a file name, click on the pencil icon to the right of the file name, make your changes, and then click on the green checkmark to the right of the text box. To cancel a file upload, click on Remove to remove the file from the commit.

To finalize your changes, click on the green Commit Changes button and enter your commit message. The files will be uploaded in the background to avoid interrupting your work.

Editing Files

To edit an existing file, click on the Edit button on the right of the screen. You’ll then be able to edit text files in your repo right from the Web App!

To save your changes after editing, click on the Commit changes button at the top of the screen and submit a commit message.
