Track a Story Ticket's Progress with Stories Lifecycle Reports

The Tickets tool has a reporting UI under the Metrics subtab. The Metrics page has a list of reports with a picture and an explanation of what each report shows you. The reports are designed to fit your development process, so that every report has a purpose. One such report is the Story Lifecycle.


The Story Lifecycle report enables you to keep track of the progress of your Story tickets in a certain milestone. This report can be very useful to see which stories have not moved forward and which ones have actually move backwards (in the case that new bug tickets are created at a faster pace than the pace at which the team is closing existing ones) that can be a symptom of poor planning or not fully baked stories on the part of the feature owner.


In order to track the progress of Story tickets, please ensure that subtasks are related to the story tickets. If a Story ticket does not have any subtask, it will not appear in the Stories Lifecycle report.


The stories Lifecycle page has the following 2 options that will help you to generate your Stories lifecycle report:


​Milestone - The milestone selector is a drop down feature that allows you to select a milestone. Selecting a milestone will display all the active Story tickets for that milestone. When the Stories lifecycle report page is opened, it displays all the active stories of the Current milestone, by default.


​Tag - The tag selector is also a drop down feature that will display only those active Stories set with a certain tag. Only active tags are available in the Tag drop down option. Tag is a good way to filter tickets by feature, team, or client and can be created via the Tickets > Settings > Tag page. To read more about tags, check out Using Colored Tags.

FAQs

Where can I find the Stories Lifecycle report in my space?

To view the Stories lifecycle report in your space, please go to the Tickets Page, then click on the Metrics subtab and finally click on the Stories Lifecycle link.


​How does a Stories Lifecycle report look and what does each column in the report signify?

Here's a sample image of a Stories Lifecycle Report.

  • The Milestone selector allows you to select a milestone (Default is Current)

  • The Tag selector allows you to select a tag

  • The Stories column lists the Story tickets in Current or selected milestone

  • The Active Tickets column lists the total number of open subtasks assigned to each Story ticket.

  • The Progress column indicates in percentage how many tickets have been closed. In other words, it depicts how far/close the story is to be released.

  • The Owners column displays the names of users Assigned to the Story ticket indicating the story owner (with link to the user activity report)

Test scenarios

The following test scenarios can be performed to generate a Stories Lifecycle report using the Milestone and Tag selectors provided in the Ticket >Metrics > Stories Lifecycle page.


​Scenario 1 - Check the status of Story tickets for a certain Milestone.


When the Stories Lifecycle page is opened, it displays a report of Current milestone by default. However, if you would like to review the progress of Story tickets of a different milestone, then simply perform the following steps to do so.

  1. Open your space.

  2. Go to Tickets tool > Metrics > Stories Lifecycle 

  3. Select a Milestone from the Milestone drop-down.

Result:

Only active stories of the selected Milestone are displayed in the report.


​Scenario 2 - Review the progress of Story tickets for a certain tag.

  1. Open your space.

  2. Go to Tickets tool > Metrics > Stories Lifecycle 

  3. Select a Milestone from the Milestone drop-down

  4. Select a tag from the Tag drop-down

Result:

Only active stories of the selected Milestone associated with the selected Tag are displayed in the report.


​Scenario 3 - View a Story ticket from the Stories Lifecycle report.

  1. To view a story ticket, simply click on the Story ticket in the report. This will redirect you to the Related Tickets tab of that story


Scenario 4 - View the Activity report of the Story Owner.

  1. Click on the Owner name to open the Activity report of the Story Owner.
